How We Verify
Last updated: 15 October 2026
Before any article is published, a reviewer opens the issuing authority’s own document and checks every fact, date, figure and link against it. If something cannot be confirmed, it is removed. If the article fails any check, it is held back until it is fixed.
The steps every article goes through
- Open the primary source. We find the instrument on the issuing authority’s website and confirm its title, reference number, issue date and effective date.
- Read the operative text. We mark the obligations, thresholds, deadlines and penalties in the document itself, not in a summary.
- Write the answer first. Who issued what, when, and what it requires, followed by the detail.
- Cite at the point of use. Each fact carries its instrument, section or paragraph, and appears again in the Sources list with the date it was verified.
- Independent review. A second person, the named reviewer, checks facts, figures, dates, links, tone and neutrality, then signs off with a date.
- Check again on the day. On the morning of publication we re-open the authority’s website for extensions, replacements or response papers.
The publishing checks
An article is cleared to publish only when every one of these is a yes:
- Facts checked against the authority’s document
- Issue date confirmed on the authority’s website
- Source quoted where each fact appears
- Official links only
- Length within our standard
- Layout complete: answer box, key facts table, FAQ and sources
- Neutral wording
- Author, reviewer and dates named
- Title, description, structured data and internal links in place
- At least half of the article specific to its instrument and country
What “Last verified” means
The “Last verified” date on an article is the day a reviewer last confirmed its facts and links against the authority’s website. We aim to re-verify every article at least every 90 days, and we check for broken links every week.
